The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday.
This announcement aligns with the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by President Bola Tinubu to pay tribute to Buhari’s legacy.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
According to the minister, the holiday serves as a mark of respect for the former president’s dedicated service, his role in Nigeria’s democratic progress, and his lasting contributions to governance and national development.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served the nation with integrity, commitment, and a deep dedication to its unity and growth. This public holiday offers Nigerians a chance to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he championed,” the statement said.
He also encouraged Nigerians to use the day to promote unity, peace, and patriotism in line with Buhari’s vision for a stronger Nigeria.
As part of the mourning period, national flags will continue to fly at half-mast until Saturday, July 20.
