Opposition parties in Lagos State have voiced strong objections to the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s sweeping victory in Saturday’s local government elections.
The APC secured all 57 chairmanship seats and won 375 out of 376 councillorship positions across the state.
Announcing the results on Sunday at the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) headquarters in Sabo, Yaba, the commission’s Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (retd.), confirmed that the APC dominated all 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas.
In a notable exception, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clinched a rare win in Ward D of the Yaba Local Council Development Area, where its candidate, Babatunde Dosunmu—a former APC member who recently defected to the PDP—defeated the APC’s candidate.
Benedict questioned the credibility of the APC’s large margin of victory, pointing to what he described as an “aggressive campaign” by the ruling party. He added, “I’m not disappointed in the results. We commend all our candidates for standing tall and making the party proud. At least now, people can distinguish between the PDP and the LP. In the last election, LP members claimed to be more popular than us. But given the APC’s aggressive approach, we all understand what that implies.”
