Atiku resigns from PDP

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has resigned his membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku Abubakar announced his resignation from the party, citing irreconcilable differences that have developed within its ranks.

He explained that his decision was prompted by the party’s current direction, which, in his view, strays from the core values upon which it was founded.

The letter stated:
“I hereby formally tender my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect.

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunities I’ve had within the party—most notably, serving two terms as Nigeria’s Vice President and contesting for the presidency on two occasions. These experiences remain some of the most defining moments of my public service.

“As one of the founding members of this great party, it pains me to take this step. However, I believe the PDP has taken a path that no longer reflects the ideals we once stood for. With that in mind, and in light of the ongoing differences that cannot be reconciled, I see no alternative but to resign.

“I wish the party and its leadership every success moving forward. Thank you for the support and opportunities over the years.”
