The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Professor Florence Obi, has called for calm over the delay in the induction of the institution’s graduating dentistry students, following the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria’s (MDCN) refusal to induct the 2016 set.
Professor Obi assured the affected students and their families that the matter would be resolved in the coming months. She acknowledged the distress the situation has caused, including reports of depression among students.
“I want to appeal to the students and parents… to be calm. On my honour, we will work with MDCN to resolve this,” she said, adding that the university is awaiting final clearance to recruit the needed academic staff—a key requirement for MDCN approval.
She pledged to seek intervention from the Minister of Education to fast-track the recruitment process and ensure compliance with MDCN standards.
