FG dismisses Turkish claim of new terror group in Nigeria

The Federal Government has dismissed reports of a new terrorist group operating within the country, following warnings from Turkish officials about the presence of the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) in Nigeria.

Speaking at a Democracy and National Unity Day event hosted by the Turkish Embassy in Abuja, Ambassador-designate Mehmet Poroy alleged that FETO continues to operate under the guise of educational and healthcare institutions, posing a threat to national security. He urged Nigerian authorities to remain vigilant.

In response, the Coordinator of the National Counter-Terrorism Centre, Major General Adamu Laka, stated there is no new terrorist group active in Nigeria and reassured citizens not to panic.

FETO, linked to the late cleric Fethullah Gulen, convicted in absentia by Turkey for allegedly orchestrating a coup in 2016, is said to have operations in over 160 countries. While affiliated institutions reportedly exist in Nigeria, there is no official evidence connecting them to terrorist activities within the country.
