The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has revealed that 18 serving state governors are currently under investigation by the agency. Speaking at a sensitization program in Lagos aimed at engaging entertainment stakeholders and Bureau de Change operators, Olukoyede said the investigations would advance further once the governors complete their tenures.
He emphasized that the EFCC remains empowered by a Supreme Court ruling that upheld its constitutional authority to investigate officials across federal, state, and local governments — even serving governors, although prosecution must wait until immunity lapses.
In a related address, Olukoyede condemned the abuse and mutilation of the naira, urging entertainers to discourage the practice at social events. He recounted the case of a former Nigerian governor arrested in the UK for spraying pounds at a birthday party — a scandal that drew police intervention due to its bizarre nature.
Over ₦100 billion in recovered public funds, Olukoyede added, has been redirected into federal initiatives such as the National Education Loan Fund and the Consumer Credit Scheme.
The event also featured NOA Director General, Lanre Isa-Onilu, who emphasized the ethical duty to protect the naira, calling it a symbol of national dignity, not party decoration.
