Former South Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol was indicted on Saturday for abuse of power, as authorities broaden their investigation into his controversial declaration of martial law last year.
Yoon triggered a political crisis on December 3 when he deployed troops to the National Assembly in an attempt to block lawmakers from voting against his martial law order — a move seen as an attempt to undermine civilian governance.
He made history as the first sitting South Korean president to be taken into custody, after evading arrest for weeks with the aid of his presidential security team. He was initially detained in January but released in March on procedural grounds, even as his insurrection trial proceeded.
Last week, Yoon was re-arrested following a new warrant issued over fears he could tamper with evidence related to the case.
