Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has urged swift intervention in the ongoing crisis affecting dental students at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), emphasizing that students must not bear the consequences of leadership shortcomings.
In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Obi reacted to reports concerning delays in graduation and induction quotas for UNICAL dental students.
“No student should suffer due to what I consider a failure of leadership,” he wrote. “We must prioritize education for our youth, especially in vital fields like science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Such essential training must not be undermined by bureaucratic or institutional lapses.”
Obi also acknowledged recent reassurances from UNICAL Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, regarding steps to address the issue, expressing appreciation for her commitment and optimism for a positive resolution.
“While the specifics are still unfolding, I appreciate the Vice Chancellor’s promise to act and look forward to a favourable outcome,” he added.
