UNIMAID Alumni, Students Reject Renaming School After Buhari

Alumni, students, and concerned citizens of Borno State have rejected President Bola Tinubu’s decision to rename the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University in honour of the late former President.

During an expanded FEC session on July 17, 2025, President Tinubu announced the renaming as a tribute. However, critics argue the institution’s name represents resilience, academic excellence, and cultural identity, especially amid years of insecurity in the North-East.

They suggested alternative institutions for the renaming—such as the Federal University of Transportation, Daura, or Army University Biu—citing Buhari’s military background and ancestral ties.
