Police: Attempt Made to Hijack Retired Officers’ Protest, IGP to Meet with Aggrieved Retirees

The Nigeria Police Force on Monday disclosed that certain individuals tried to hijack the peaceful protests by retired police officers across parts of the country, pushing for confrontation instead of dialogue.

In a statement via its official X handle, the Force noted that while the protests were peaceful, some actors with “ulterior motives” attempted to derail the movement by discouraging dialogue and encouraging disorder.

The police urged all genuine stakeholders to remain calm and law-abiding as efforts are underway to resolve their concerns respectfully.

Meanwhile, the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed readiness to personally meet with the retirees to address their grievances. The FCT Commissioner of Police has already informed the protesters of arrangements for a meeting at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.

The protests, also witnessed in Taraba State, highlighted complaints of poor welfare, unpaid pensions, and neglect. Activist Omoyele Sowore joined the Abuja protest, calling for urgent federal intervention.
