The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has raised concerns over the failure of state governments to utilise over N250 billion in intervention funds meant to improve basic education across the country.
Speaking at a financial management training held in Abuja, UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr. Aisha Garba, represented by Deputy Executive Secretary (Technical), Razaq Akinyemi, noted that the funds remain idle in the coffers of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) across the 36 states and the FCT.
The three-day training aimed at enhancing the financial capacity of SUBEBs’ fund managers, internal auditors, and grant desk officers has the theme: “Efficient and Effective Management of UBE Intervention Fund, a Key to Successful Basic Education Service Delivery.”
Garba stressed that beyond accessing the UBE matching grants, many states have failed to properly apply the funds toward educational infrastructure, teaching, and learning improvements.
