Redirecting Military Funds to Internal Policing Could Cut Terrorism by Nearly 70% — Sowore

Human rights advocate and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has stated that Nigeria could drastically curb terrorism by up to 70 percent if the Federal Government redirects a portion of its military expenditure to bolster internal policing and implement meaningful security reforms.

Human rights advocate and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has stated that Nigeria could drastically curb terrorism by up to 70 percent if the Federal Government redirects a portion of its military expenditure to bolster internal policing and implement meaningful security reforms.

Sowore said funds lost to corruption or inefficiency in the military could be better used to strengthen local law enforcement.

“If the funds being misused or misappropriated in the military were channelled into internal policing for just one year, terrorism could drop by 70 percent, kidnapping by 80 percent, and crime rates would fall to near zero nationwide,” he asserted.

Sowore also condemned the country’s failing security framework, attributing its dysfunction to inadequate police welfare and misplaced spending priorities. He noted that, despite bearing the primary burden of internal security, police officers remain underpaid and undervalued.
