Dangote Exports 1.3 Billion Litres of Petrol Amid Ongoing Fuel Imports by Marketers

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has commenced large-scale exports of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), having shipped approximately 1.35 billion litres of petrol to international markets over the past 50 days.

This was revealed by the President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, at the Global Commodity Insights Conference on West African Refined Fuel Markets, organized by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) in collaboration with S&P Global Insights.

Dangote stated that between June and July 2025, the refinery exported nearly 1 million tonnes of PMS—equivalent to about 1.35 billion litres.

“Today, Nigeria has truly become a net exporter of refined petroleum products,” he said. “Before coming up to speak, I asked my team how many tonnes of PMS we’ve exported. From early June until now, we’ve shipped around 1 million tonnes in just 50 days.”

Despite this progress, Nigeria continues to depend heavily on fuel imports. According to NMDPRA’s Chief Executive, Farouk Ahmed, both Nigeria and other West African nations still import roughly 69% of their gasoline needs from international suppliers.

Ahmed noted that regional trade data for 2025 shows an average of 2.05 million metric tonnes of gasoline is exchanged monthly, with the majority coming from overseas.

In fact, within just the past eight days, Nigeria imported 231.88 million litres of PMS, according to the Shipping Position Daily released by the Nigerian Ports Authority. These volumes entered through major terminals including Apapa, Tincan, and Calabar Ports.
