President Tinubu Applauds Super Falcons for Reaching WAFCON Final

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the Super Falcons for their hard-fought 2-1 victory over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, securing a place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca, Morocco.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the President praised the team’s performance as a brilliant display of determination, skill, and the unyielding Nigerian spirit.

“Congratulations to our Super Falcons! Your incredible #WAFCON2024 semi-finals victory over South Africa today was nothing short of superlative. It was a magnificent display of grit, talent, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit,” he wrote.

President Tinubu expressed national pride in their achievement and encouraged the team to remain focused in their pursuit of Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title.

“You have made the nation proud. Keep soaring. Don’t stop until you bring the trophy home. Nigerians worldwide are rooting for you. We are waiting to receive the cup,” he added.

The Super Falcons clinched their place in the final through a dramatic late winner from defender Mitchel Alozie, who launched a long ball into the South African penalty area in the closing minutes. The ball eluded everyone—including the goalkeeper—and found the back of the net, shocking the defending champions.

Earlier in the match, Captain Rasheedat Ajibade gave Nigeria the lead in the 44th minute with a composed penalty kick after a South African defender handled Folashade Ijamilusi’s cross in the box.

South Africa equalised in the 56th minute when Linda Motlhalo converted a penalty, following a foul by Osinachi Ohale, who was judged to have pulled down a South African attacker.

With this victory, the Super Falcons advance to the final, continuing their quest for a record-extending 10th continental crown.
