Google pledges $37 million to boost AI development across Africa

On Thursday, Google announced a $37 million initiative aimed at advancing artificial intelligence development across Africa. The funding will support local AI research and innovation in sectors such as agriculture, health, and education, with a focus on adapting technology to Africa’s diverse languages and challenges.

The announcement was made during the launch of Google’s new AI community center in Accra, Ghana, which will serve as a hub for training, collaboration, and AI literacy programs.

“Africa is home to some of the most important and inspiring work in AI today,” said James Manyika, Google’s Senior Vice President, during the event.

One of the key programs introduced is the AI Collaborative for Food Security, which connects researchers and non-profits to build tools for early hunger detection, improving crop resilience, and supporting decision-making for smallholder farmers. The initiative aims to help African food systems better withstand climate and economic disruptions.

In addition, Google plans to launch a financing platform to support AI-focused startups in agriculture, healthcare, and education. Through its philanthropic branch, the company is investing $7 million to expand AI education efforts in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and Ghana.

Google also pledged $3 million to support Masakhane, a tech collective that develops AI tools in over 40 African languages. Furthermore, $1 million research grants will be awarded to both the African Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and the Wits Machine Intelligence and Neural Discovery Institute in South Africa.

Ghana’s Minister of Communications and Digital Technology, Sam George, encouraged citizens to apply AI solutions to pressing national issues like flooding, waste disposal, and traffic management.

Google’s ongoing AI projects in Africa include maternal health tools in Ghana and Nigeria, wildfire alert systems in East Africa, and language model development hubs in Accra and Nairobi.
