The Federal Government has initiated efforts to rescue and repatriate a group of Nigerian workers stranded in the Central African Republic.
This move follows the circulation of a viral video showing the distressed individuals abandoned in Bambari, a town located about 850 kilometres from the capital city, Bangui.
In a statement issued Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, the government confirmed that officials from Nigeria’s mission in the Central African Republic have made contact with the affected citizens.
According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the Nigerian Embassy in Bangui is working closely with local authorities to ensure the group’s safety, well-being, and prompt return to Nigeria.
“The Ministry is deeply concerned about the condition of Nigerian workers stranded in Bambari, reportedly abandoned by their employers and facilitators. The video has sparked widespread concern across social media,” the statement read.
It added, “Our mission in the Central African Republic has contacted the individuals. Their passports have been recovered, and arrangements are underway to transport them to Bangui. They are expected to arrive in the capital on Saturday, July 26, 2025, accompanied by a military escort.”
The ministry also noted that discussions are ongoing with the employers regarding accommodation and welfare support in Bangui prior to repatriation.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding Nigerians abroad, the government advised citizens to thoroughly vet foreign job offers and secure proper documentation before traveling.
“The Federal Government remains committed to protecting the rights and dignity of Nigerians globally. We urge all citizens planning to work abroad to verify their employers and ensure they register with Nigerian embassies in their host countries to avoid similar challenges,” the statement concluded.
