Heavy Rains Flood Lagos Communities, Vehicles Submerged; Govt Urges Calm

Several communities across Lagos were submerged on Monday after a prolonged downpour that began late Sunday and continued into the next day. Areas like Ijede in Ikorodu, Lekki, Eti-Osa, Ajegunle, Agege, Surulere, and Alimosho were heavily affected, with homes and vehicles underwater and residents wading through flooded streets.

The flood disrupted business and transportation, as motorists avoided submerged roads and residents took to social media to seek help.

Similar incidents were recorded in Niger State, where farmlands and homes were washed away in Lapai, Paikoro, and Mokwa, while eight communities in Adamawa were also hit by flooding last week.

In response, Lagos Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab acknowledged the disruption and urged calm, citing the coastal nature of Lagos and climate change as contributing factors. He warned of continued rain and possible flash floods over the next three days, according to a NiMET advisory.

Wahab urged residents to avoid dumping waste in drains and emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to clean and maintain drainage channels.
