Keyamo Defends N712bn Lagos Airport Renovation Amid Backlash

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has defended the Federal Government’s approval of N712 billion for the renovation of the E and D wings of the old Murtala Muhammed Airport terminal in Lagos, following widespread public criticism.

Keyamo recently revealed that the Federal Executive Council had approved the fund to give the terminal a comprehensive upgrade—the first full-scale rehabilitation since the terminal’s establishment. The contract was awarded to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the same firm behind Terminal 2 at the airport. The scope includes terminal refurbishment, apron expansion, and construction of access roads and bridges within the airport premises.

However, the announcement sparked outrage on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the cost. Activist Omoyele Sowore described the terminal’s current condition as resembling a “war zone,” accusing the government of deliberately allowing the infrastructure to deteriorate to justify the hefty repair bill.
