Gulumbe Farmers appeal to Governor Idris over alleged land seizure

Residents of Gulumbe village, located in Birnin Kebbi LGA, are urgently calling on Governor Nasir Idris to intervene in what they describe as an unlawful takeover of their ancestral farmlands.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, community representative Abubakar Tafidan-Gulumbe decried the sudden invasion by Mustapha Sani-Zauro, who allegedly began clearing farmland using heavy machinery without informing local leaders or obtaining consent.

When confronted, Sani-Zauro reportedly claimed he was working on behalf of members of the governor’s family—an assertion the community strongly denies. “Governor Idris is a man of integrity,” Tafidan-Gulumbe said. “He has always acquired land through lawful means. He once bought a plot directly from me.”

The encroachment has affected over 180 farmers, with estimated losses of ₦30 million due to the destruction of crops like maize, millet, groundnuts, and guinea corn. “This year’s planting is under threat,” he lamented.

In response, the Gulumbe community is urging the governor to uphold justice and protect their livelihoods. They’ve pledged to pursue redress through legal and traditional avenues, including petitions to security agencies and the Emirate Council—hoping to avert any escalation or civil unrest.

As of now, the Kebbi State Government has yet to issue an official response.
