Helicopter crash claims lives of Ghana’s Defence and Environment Ministers

Tragedy struck Ghana on Wednesday as a military helicopter crashed in the southern Ashanti region, claiming eight lives, including prominent government officials. Among the deceased are Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science, and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

Also killed were Deputy National Security Coordinator Limuna Muniru, former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Samuel Sarpong, ex-legislator Samuel Aboagye, and three air force crew members.

The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed they lost radar contact with the Z9 helicopter before the crash. Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff to President John Mahama, described the incident as a national tragedy, offering condolences to the families of the victims.

“This is a heartbreaking loss. The president and government share in the sorrow of our nation and salute the bravery of those who died in the line of duty,” Debrah said.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.
