ASUU Warns of Looming Crisis, Urges Government to Act Immediately

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on both the federal and state governments to urgently address lingering issues to prevent another industrial action in public universities.

In a statement signed by its president, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, ASUU expressed deep frustration over unfulfilled agreements, poor funding, and worsening staff welfare.

The union’s warning follows recent remarks by Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa, who confidently declared that strikes in tertiary institutions were a thing of the past. ASUU, however, insists that genuine action—not just dialogue—is needed.

“While we welcome the minister’s optimism, the government must match words with visible commitment,” the union said.

ASUU also lamented the harsh working conditions, stating that many lecturers are struggling to survive and lack basic research tools while facing mounting personal expenses such as transport, school fees, and unpaid bills.
