The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that over 40 people are missing after a boat carrying more than 50 passengers capsized on Sunday morning in Sokoto State.
In a statement, NEMA said the boat was en route to a local market when the accident occurred. So far, 10 people have been rescued, while search and rescue operations are ongoing for the remaining passengers.
Boat accidents remain a frequent tragedy on Nigeria’s poorly regulated waterways, often caused by overcrowding, lack of safety measures, and poor vessel maintenance, issues that worsen during the rainy season when water levels rise and conditions become more dangerous.
