FG sets up panel to investigate Abuja-Kaduna train accident

The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Said Alkali, has set up a committee to investigate the recent train derailment that occurred on Tuesday in Jere, while en route from Abuja to Kaduna.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Information, Mrs. Janet McDickson.

The committee, which comprises key stakeholders, has been tasked with uncovering both the immediate and underlying causes of the incident.

According to Minister Alkali, the panel will also be responsible for proposing long-term solutions to prevent a recurrence of such accidents. In addition, it will offer recommendations aimed at improving the overall safety and efficiency of rail transport in Nigeria.

“The safety of passengers is of utmost concern,” the minister said, adding that the committee’s work is vital to ensuring a safer railway system.

Prof. Danwaka Shuaibu (STA, HMT) – Member

Zirra Finbar (RTS) – Member

Mr. Omotola Olusegun (Legal) – Member/Secretary

Dr. Kayode Opeifa (Managing Director, NRC) – Member

I.A. Ebuniwe (Railway Inspector) – Member

A representative of Technics Engineering Architecture Marketing Nig. Ltd – Member

A representative of CCECC – Member

A representative from Civil Society Organisations – Member

One male and one female representative of passengers – Members

The investigation comes amid growing concerns over railway safety, particularly on the heavily used Abuja-Kaduna corridor.
