Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, a former Labour Party governorship candidate in the 2023 Lagos State election, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
He announced on Saturday during a formal event held in Lagos, marking a significant step in the broader effort by opposition forces to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The move comes amid ongoing efforts by the ADC to form a strong coalition of opposition parties, which was formally launched in July to build a united front capable of mounting a credible challenge in the next election cycle.
During his declaration, Rhodes-Vivour described his defection as part of a wider coalition agenda, saying:
“I’m pleased to become part of this family. I look forward to the unity and governance that this platform will bring to Nigerians. My prayer is for wisdom among our leaders and party structure as we chart a new course for this country.”
He emphasized the need for opposition unity, warning against fragmentation ahead of the 2027 elections.
“This coalition is about rescuing Nigeria. Since the 2023 elections, I’ve maintained that the opposition cannot afford to be divided. We must stand together through a strong coalition to have a real shot in 2027,” he added.
Rhodes-Vivour also alleged attempts by the police to disrupt the event, initially scheduled to take place in the Alimosho area. According to a statement by his aide, Olalekan Anjolaiya, the organisers had notified security agencies in advance, yet security operatives reportedly blocked access to the venue on Saturday morning. The event was later relocated to another site within the same local government area.
