The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has issued a strong warning to the Federal Government over its planned 5% tax on petroleum products, calling it “economic wickedness” against already struggling Nigerians.
In a statement signed by President General Festus Osifo and Secretary General N.A. Toro, the union rejected the proposed levy, saying:
“Workers and citizens are still reeling from the pains of subsidy removal, skyrocketing fuel prices, food inflation, and a collapsing naira. To now introduce another levy is to deliberately compound suffering.”
The TUC said it would not sit idly while citizens are “squeezed dry” by harsh economic policies, and demanded an immediate withdrawal of the plan.
“This is unacceptable! We demand a total stop to this anti-people’s plan. Failure to do so will leave us with no choice but to mobilise for a nationwide resistance,” the union warned.
The statement signals growing labour unrest amid inflation, high fuel prices, and frustration with ongoing economic reforms.
