A late-night inferno on Monday engulfed several warehouse plazas at Taiwo Line, Lagos Island, causing panic and major losses among traders.
The fire, which reportedly started around 8:00 p.m., quickly spread across at least five plazas. Eyewitnesses said traders and passersby scrambled to rescue goods, as thick smoke and flames consumed large sections of the area.
One of the plazas was said to be completely razed, with others still burning as of press time.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a fire outbreak at Afriland Towers earlier in the day, also located on Lagos Island.
Emergency responders — including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, police, and Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps — are currently on ground battling the flames. However, no official statement has been issued yet.
A trader, Mariam, shared her experience:
“We just saw smoke coming out, then flames followed. People were running everywhere. Millions have been lost. A friend who just bought new stock this morning lost everything.”
Two fire trucks reportedly exhausted their water supplies as the blaze continued to rage, prompting fears that more buildings could be affected if not swiftly contained.
