Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 elections, has filed two fundamental rights lawsuits at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the Department of State Services (DSS), Meta (Facebook), and X Corp (formerly Twitter).
In a statement released Tuesday and signed by his lawyer, Tope Temokun, Sowore is challenging what he describes as “unconstitutional censorship” of his social media accounts by the DSS in collaboration with the tech companies.
Temokun emphasized that the case centers on the protection of free speech in Nigeria, warning that allowing security agencies to influence global platforms undermines democratic principles.
“Censorship of political criticism is alien to democracy. Section 39 of the Nigerian Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of expression without interference,” the statement read.
Sowore’s legal team argues that no agency, regardless of its power, has the right to suppress free speech or silence dissenting voices.
