In a major foreign policy shift, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada on Sunday officially recognised the State of Palestine, drawing strong backlash from Israel.
The move, described as a step toward reviving peace and supporting a two-state solution, was announced just ahead of the UN General Assembly opening in New York.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated on X, “Today, to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis, and a two-state solution, the United Kingdom formally recognises the State of Palestine.”
Portugal is also expected to follow suit, joining a growing list of countries pressuring Israel over its actions in Gaza following the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack.
Britain and Canada have now become the first G7 nations to formally recognise Palestinian statehood, with other European powers like France reportedly considering similar action.
