US foils telecoms disruption plot ahead of UN summit

The US Secret Service has dismantled a network of electronic devices that posed a serious threat to New York’s telecommunications infrastructure ahead of the United Nations General Assembly.

While the agency stopped short of naming those responsible, it linked the sophisticated operation to “nation-state” actors and individuals already known to federal law enforcement.

According to ABC News, a source familiar with the investigation said the plot is believed to be connected to the Chinese government.

Secret Service Director Sean Curran warned that the potential impact of the devices on national communications could not be overstated. The devices were reportedly capable of conducting anonymous threats and enabling a wide range of telecom-based attacks.

The revelation came just moments before President Donald Trump addressed world leaders at the UN headquarters in New York.
