Lagos hosts historic E1 grand prix ceremony in Victoria Island

The Lagos State Government has officially concluded the E1 Lagos Grand Prix, marking the first-ever E1 Championship event held on African soil. The closing ceremony took place in Victoria Island, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighting the event as a milestone in innovation, clean energy, and global sports tourism.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the championship as a powerful symbol of Lagos’ creativity, resilience, and its growing commitment to sustainability and clean energy solutions.

“Hosting the E1 Grand Prix is not just about sport,” the Governor stated. “It’s about innovation, environmental responsibility, and putting Lagos on the global map for future-focused development.”


What is the E1 Championship?

The E1 Championship is the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing series, featuring teams that compete in high-performance electric boats. The series promotes clean marine technology and showcases advancements in electric propulsion systems.

The Lagos event, held on October 4th and 5th, 2025, welcomed international teams, spectators, and industry leaders, further reinforcing the city’s emerging status as a global destination for tech-driven sporting events.

The announcement of Lagos as the first African host city was previously made in Monaco, during an earlier leg of the E1 Series, where global innovators gathered to witness the evolution of electric marine racing.

Bringing the E1 Championship to Lagos is being hailed as a major step forward for African representation in global sports, as well as a boost to tourism and the state’s green energy ambitions.
