Military arrests 16 officers over indiscipline, service violations

The Armed Forces of Nigeria has confirmed the arrest of 16 officers over alleged acts of indiscipline and breaches of military service regulations.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the arrests followed a routine internal military exercise aimed at upholding discipline and professionalism within the ranks.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the affected officers were frustrated by repeated failures in promotion examinations and perceived career stagnation, which reportedly contributed to their misconduct.

“Some of the officers were already under investigation for various offences and are either undergoing trial or awaiting court proceedings,” the statement noted.

Gusau emphasized that the conduct of the arrested officers fell short of the standards expected in the military, adding that those found guilty after investigation would face appropriate disciplinary measures in line with military procedures.

“The Armed Forces will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority,” the statement added.

He reassured the public that the action is part of routine disciplinary measures to maintain order, loyalty, and professionalism, stressing that the military remains fully committed to its constitutional responsibilities.
