Dangote Begins 2.5bn Fertiliser Plant Project in Ethiopia

The Dangote Group has kicked off construction of a massive 2.5 billion fertiliser plant in Gode, Ethiopia, in partnership with Ethiopian Investment Holdings. The plant will produce 3 million metric tonnes of urea annually, using natural gas from Ethiopia’s Hilal and Calub reserves.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed hailed the project as a symbol of African industrial unity and economic progress. Aliko Dangote praised Ethiopia’s economic reforms and reaffirmed the group’s commitment to industrialising Africa and boosting food security.

The plant will also produce ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate, NPK, and calcium ammonium nitrate, positioning Ethiopia as a major fertiliser hub in East Africa. Within five years, Ethiopia could become a top agricultural economy on the continent.

Financial support is being provided by Afreximbank, Africa Finance Corporation, Access Bank, First Bank, and Zenith Bank.

Dangote concluded, “Only Africans can truly transform Africa,” referencing the group’s impact on Nigeria’s cement, fertiliser, and petroleum sectors.
