Mexico City, October 11, 2025 — At least 23 people have died across Mexico following days of torrential rainfall that triggered landslides, river overflows, and widespread flooding, authorities confirmed on Friday.

According to Mexico’s civil defense agency, 31 out of 32 states have been affected by intense rains this week. The worst-hit regions include Veracruz in the east, Queretaro and Hidalgo in the central region, and San Luis Potosi in the north-central part of the country.

In Hidalgo state, authorities reported 16 fatalities and damage to over 1,000 homes. Puebla state recorded five deaths, with at least 11 people still missing. In Veracruz, a minor lost their life, while in Queretaro, a police officer died in a rain-related incident.

A poignant image from Poza Rica, Veracruz, captured on October 10, shows a family photo album lying in the mud—a stark reminder of the personal losses behind the statistics.

National Response Underway

Laura Velázquez, head of Mexico’s National Civil Protection, said the storms have caused landslides, collapsed roads, and river overflows, significantly disrupting daily life and infrastructure in multiple states.

President Claudia Sheinbaum addressed the nation via X (formerly Twitter), stating:

“We are working to support the population, reopen roads, and get the power back on.”

The Mexican military has been deployed to assist in emergency operations, with over 5,400 troops on the ground, supported by rescue vehicles, equipment, and humanitarian aid.

Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions closely, as cleanup efforts begin and search operations remain ongoing for those still unaccounted for.
