The Federal Government is set to distribute ₦6.3 billion in interest- and collateral-free loans to 21,000 Nigerians affected by recent flood disasters, as part of efforts to cushion the impact of climate-related crises and strengthen food security.
This was announced by Yusuf Sununu, Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, during a roundtable held in Abuja to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. The event was attended by key officials, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, among others.
Each beneficiary will receive ₦300,000 to support recovery, particularly in agriculture and farming, which have been severely impacted by flooding.
Other Key Highlights:
- ₦300 Billion Disbursed to 8.1 Million Households:
Through the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) scheme under the National Social Investment Agency, the FG has reached over 8.1 million households with financial aid to boost health, education, and general well-being. - Support for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs):
The government is also working on a food security program in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, where:- IDPs will retain 30% of produce they farm.
- The government will buy the remaining 70%, paying the IDPs directly to empower them financially.
Sununu reaffirmed that all these initiatives fall under the “Hope Agenda” of President Bola Tinubu, aimed at building community resilience and reducing poverty nationwide.
