President Tinubu seeks Senate approval for Prof. Amupitan as INEC chairman

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm Professor Joash Amupitan as the next Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the letter during plenary on Tuesday, noting that the nomination follows constitutional requirements for legislative approval.

Amupitan, a Professor of Law and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos, was unanimously endorsed by the Council of State last week. He hails from Kogi State, becoming the first nominee from the state for the INEC chairmanship.

President Tinubu described him as “apolitical and a man of integrity,” while Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo also endorsed his character and competence.

The Senate has referred the nomination to the committee of the whole for further consideration.
