The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has reiterated its dedication to enhancing Nigeria’s trade capacity and expanding the export of locally made goods through its export certification scheme, SONEXCAP.
Speaking during the 2025 World Standards Day in Lagos, SON Director-General, Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, urged manufacturers and exporters to take advantage of the scheme, which helps ensure products meet international standards—especially under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“SONEXCAP is more than just a certification; it’s a gateway to regional and global markets. It builds confidence in Nigerian products and helps overcome export barriers,” Okeke stated.
He emphasized that standards are the universal language of trade and crucial for product acceptance globally. Okeke also highlighted the importance of collaboration among government, the private sector, academia, and civil society to achieve sustainable development goals, particularly SDG 17.
The SONEXCAP initiative, he noted, supports small and medium-sized enterprises by simplifying certification and improving product credibility. SON has also strengthened international partnerships to boost testing and conformity assessment.
“When Nigerian products carry the SON quality mark, they show the world we’re ready,” Okeke added.
Meanwhile, Director-General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Mr. Segun Ajayi-Kadir—represented by Mr. Joseph Imoleke—commended SON’s leadership for its proactive engagement with industry players and support for local manufacturing and exports.
