The Dangote Refinery has announced plans to expand its processing capacity from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million bpd, a move that will make it the largest refinery in the world.
President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, announced during a press briefing in Lagos on Sunday, alongside his close associate and Chairman of First Bank, Mr Femi Otedola.
According to Dangote, construction work on the expansion project will commence immediately.
“We are expanding the Dangote Petroleum Refinery from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. Upon completion, this will make it the largest refinery in the world, surpassing the Jamnagar Refinery in India,” he said.
Dangote revealed that about 65,000 workers would be engaged during the construction phase, with 85 percent of the workforce expected to be Nigerians.
He added that the refinery’s power generation capacity would be doubled from 500 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts, while production standards would be upgraded from Euro 5 to Euro 6 fuel specifications.
Dangote also disclosed that the refinery would be listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 2026, enabling Nigerians to become shareholders.
Expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support, Dangote noted that the expansion project is expected to be completed within three years.
