92-Year-Old Paul Biya re-elected, extends 43-year rule over Cameroon

Cameroon’s long-time leader, Paul Biya, has secured another seven-year term at the age of 92, further extending his more than four-decade grip on power.

The Constitutional Council on Monday officially declared Biya the winner of the October 12 presidential election, with 53.66% of the vote. His main challenger, Issa Tchiroma, came second with 35.19%.

Tchiroma had previously claimed victory, alleging widespread irregularities in the electoral process.

With this result, Biya—who has led Cameroon since 1982—cements his position as one of the world’s longest-serving heads of state, defying both age and mounting demands for political change.

The announcement has triggered mixed reactions nationwide, with supporters hailing continuity and stability, while critics condemn what they see as the absence of genuine democratic renewal.
