There was mild drama at the National Assembly on Wednesday when representatives of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) staged a walkout during an investigative session with the House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies.
The JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, was absent and sent Director Mufutau Bello to represent him.
Trouble began when Bello requested that journalists vacate the meeting room, claiming the documents he intended to present contained sensitive information.
However, members of the Committee rejected the request, insisting that its proceedings were public and that the Committee was constitutionally empowered to determine how its sittings should be conducted.
In a dramatic turn of events, the JAMB representative became visibly agitated, ordered his delegation to leave the room, and walked out of the session, leaving the lawmakers momentarily stunned.
Angered by the walkout, the Committee directed the Sergeant-at-Arms to arrest the JAMB officials, but they had already exited the National Assembly premises.
Following the incident, the Committee issued a summons for Prof. Oloyede to appear in person with his full management team and all relevant documents on Tuesday next week.
Failure to comply, the Committee warned, could result in the issuance of a warrant of arrest against the JAMB Registrar.
