Senate confirms President Tinubu’s Nominees as service chiefs

The Senate on Wednesday confirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s nominees for the positions of service chiefs.

Those confirmed include Maj.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff, Maj.-Gen. Wahidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff, and Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff.

Their confirmation followed a two-hour closed-door screening session during which senators questioned the nominees on strategies to strengthen national security, modernise military operations, and reform the armed forces.

President Tinubu had earlier urged the upper chamber to screen and confirm the nominees, prompting the Senate to dedicate its entire Wednesday plenary to the exercise.

After the session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the nominees’ confirmation to a voice vote, which was unanimously approved by the lawmakers.

Akpabio commended the President for his choices, saying the nominees possess “the experience, discipline, and integrity needed to reposition the military.”

He added that the confirmation signaled “renewed national confidence” in the Tinubu administration’s security reforms and reaffirmed the government’s focus on protecting the lives and property of Nigerians.
