Senate steps down debt report to screen newly appointed service chiefs

The Senate on Wednesday suspended consideration of the Committee on Local and Foreign Debts’ report to begin the screening of newly appointed service chiefs.

The session, which began with the scheduled presentation of the report on New External Borrowing in the 2025 Appropriation Act, refinancing of maturing Eurobonds, and the issuance of a debut Sovereign Sukuk in the international capital market, was led by the committee chairman, Senator Aliyu Wamakko.

However, midway through the sitting, a motion was moved to step down the report to another legislative day to enable the chamber to proceed with the screening exercise.

Shortly after, the Senate dissolved into the Committee of the Whole to commence the screening of the service chiefs, about two hours after their arrival at the National Assembly complex.

To facilitate the session, the Senate suspended its standing rules to admit the nominees — the Chief of Defence Staff and other newly appointed service chiefs — into the chamber, escorted by the Sergeant-at-Arms.

The nominees were accompanied by the Minister of Defence, Abubakar Badaru, members of their families, and other senior military officers.
