Six members of the House of Representatives from opposition parties have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Among them are five lawmakers from Enugu State — Obetta Chidi, Anayo Onwuegbu, Dennis Agbo, Martins George, and Nnaji Nnolim — whose defection was formally witnessed at the National Assembly by Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah. The sixth lawmaker, Daniel Asama from Plateau State, also joined the APC from the Labour Party (LP).
The defections by the Enugu lawmakers come just two weeks after Governor Mbah himself left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC.
In a state-wide broadcast announcing his decision, Mbah explained that joining the ruling party was necessary to better align Enugu with the federal government and attract greater development to the state.
“There comes a time when everyone must make a bold choice to shape their destiny,” the governor said. “After careful reflection, we have decided to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the All Progressives Congress.”
The latest wave of defections adds to the growing list of lawmakers who have recently crossed over to the APC. In July, seven opposition lawmakers from Akwa Ibom State joined Governor Umo Eno in the ruling party, while in May, six members of the House from Delta State also defected from the PDP to the APC.
