Wike Approves Final 14-Day Grace for FCT Land Use Defaulters

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has granted a final 14-day grace period to property owners who violated land use regulations in parts of Abuja to pay a ₦5 million conversion fee or face enforcement action.

This was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, who disclosed that the new grace period takes effect from Tuesday, November 11, 2025, and applies to property owners in Asokoro, Maitama, Garki, and Wuse districts.

According to Olayinka, the decision followed the expiration of the initial 30-day deadline given to affected allottees and title holders to regularise their property use in line with FCT development regulations.

“Failure to comply within the stated 14 calendar days grace period will result in enforcement actions by the FCT Administration,” the statement warned.

Olayinka noted that the extension reflects the minister’s desire to encourage voluntary compliance before stricter enforcement begins.

“Sequel to the public notices made by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on September 8, 9, and 10, 2025, regarding the reviewed Land Use/Purpose Clause of properties in the FCT, the general public—particularly allottees and title holders—are hereby informed that the 30-day period given for the payment of penalty or violation fee of ₦5 million and other applicable charges has since expired,” the statement read in part.

“However, the Honourable Minister of the FCT, His Excellency, Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, has magnanimously granted a final grace period of 14 calendar days from Tuesday, November 11, 2025, for all affected property owners along the listed streets and locations to comply with the terms and conditions of approval for land use change or conversion.”

The affected areas include:

  • Maitama District: Gana Street, Usuma Street
  • Asokoro District: Yakubu Gowon Crescent
  • Wuse II District: Aminu Kano Crescent, Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent
  • Garki II District: Ladoke Akintola Boulevard, Gimbiya Street, Onitsha Street
  • Garki I District: Ogbomosho Street, Lafia Close, Yola Street, Abriba Close, Danbatta Street, Ringim Close, and Ilorin Street

Earlier in September, the FCT Administration had imposed fines on several property owners in Abuja for converting residential buildings to commercial use without approval.

The latest directive, according to Wike, marks the final window for compliance before the commencement of strict enforcement and possible demolition of defaulting properties.
