The Federal Government has intensified welfare reforms for serving and retired military personnel, disbursing ₦18 billion in Group Life Insurance benefits and launching a Veterans’ Databank and Call Centre.
Minister of Defence Mohammed Badaru announced this on Wednesday during a press briefing in Abuja on activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.
Badaru explained that the welfare reforms were part of the government’s “Soldier First” policy, which focuses on boosting morale and improving living standards, healthcare, and overall well-being for service members and their families.
“Those who defend our nation deserve not only our gratitude but also our tangible support,” the minister stated.
He added that the newly established Veterans’ Databank would ensure efficient management of veterans’ affairs. At the same time, the call centre would offer direct assistance to retired officers and families of fallen heroes.
The minister further revealed plans to review the Nigerian Legion Act and establish a Veterans Federation of Nigeria (VFN) to unify welfare and advocacy efforts for veterans across the country.
He noted that the welfare package for troops had been expanded to include the Debarment Allowance, recently introduced to enhance medical coverage through Defence Health Maintenance Limited, alongside ongoing upgrades of barracks and medical facilities.
Badaru also highlighted that the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) Act 2023 would strengthen local production of uniforms, equipment, and essential supplies to support both operational efficiency and troop welfare.
In addition, he unveiled a new initiative titled “Reclaiming the Ungoverned Space for Economic Benefits (RUSEB-P)”, designed to engage retired veterans in rebuilding communities liberated from insurgents through farming, mining, and reconstruction activities.
The Minister urged Nigerians to continue honouring the sacrifices of the armed forces, emphasizing that the welfare of troops and veterans remains vital to national unity, stability, and security.
