Ethiopia beats Nigeria to host COP-32 in 2027

Ethiopia has been selected to host the 32nd United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32) in 2027, edging out Nigeria in a highly competitive bidding process.

The confirmation was announced by Richard Muyingi, Chair of the African Group of Negotiators, who stated that the decision followed a meeting in which Ethiopia’s revised expression of interest received broad endorsement.

COP hosting rights rotate among global regions, and Africa is scheduled to host the 2027 edition.
Meanwhile, the host country for COP31 remains undecided, with Turkey and Australia currently being considered.

Nigeria formally declared interest in hosting COP32 in March after a visit by Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Ethiopia also reiterated its intention during the second Africa Climate Summit, where Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed highlighted the country’s readiness, citing its capacity, infrastructure, strategic location, and connectivity to successfully stage the global climate conference.

Africa has hosted several COP summits in previous years—Morocco in 2001 and 2016, South Africa in 2011, and Egypt in 2022—but none has ever been held in West Africa.
