Tinubu urges Super Eagles to stay focused after 4–1 victory over Gabon

President Bola Tinubu has charged the Super Eagles to remain focused and determined until they clinch a qualification spot for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. His message came after Nigeria moved a step closer with an emphatic 4–1 win over Gabon in the African playoffs on Thursday.

The Super Eagles left it late against the Panthers, relying on three extra-time goals to seal their place in Sunday’s playoff final. Akor Adams opened the scoring in the 78th minute, but Gabon equalised in the 89th minute through Mario Lemina’s deflected effort.

In extra time, Chidera Ejuke restored Nigeria’s lead with his first goal for the national team, before Victor Osimhen struck twice to take his international tally to 31 goals in 45 appearances.

Following the win, President Tinubu praised the team’s resilience in a post on X, writing:

“This is the true Nigerian spirit of resilience against all odds. Do not stop until you secure a qualification. Super Eagles, keep soaring. The nation stands with you. Soar!”

The build-up to the match had been overshadowed by a bonus dispute with the Nigeria Football Federation, which saw the players and staff boycott Tuesday’s training session—leaving the team with only one full practice before the encounter.

Nigeria will now face the winner of the DR Congo vs. Cameroon fixture on Sunday. The victor will advance to the FIFA Intercontinental Playoffs in Mexico in March 2026, where two additional World Cup slots will be contested.

Nigeria are competing in the playoffs after missing out on an automatic qualification spot during the earlier group phase.
