DR Congo Shatter Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup Dream

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will not feature at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, following a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo in the African play-offs final on Sunday.

The match, held in Rabat, Morocco, ended 1-1 after normal and extra time, but DR Congo triumphed 4-3 on penalties to claim Africa’s sole ticket for the intercontinental play-offs scheduled for March 2026.

“Deadlock broken from the spot, DR Congo are through to the FIFA Play-Off Tournament!” the official match report confirmed.

Early Lead for Nigeria

Nigeria took the lead just three minutes into the game when midfielder Frank Onyeka struck early to give the Super Eagles an advantage. Despite creating several chances to double their lead, the Nigerian attack struggled to convert, while DR Congo gradually grew into the match and controlled the tempo.

In the 32nd minute, DR Congo’s Mechak Elia equalized, ending the first half at 1-1. Notably, Victor Osimhen did not return after halftime, prompting Nigeria to introduce Akor Adams of Sevilla and later Tolu Arokodare, as well as Chidera Ejuke and Simon Moses to bolster the attack—but the substitutions had little impact on the outcome.

Extra Time Drama

The game remained tightly contested in extra time, with DR Congo dictating play and almost scoring. A goal by the Leopards was ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. Nwabali also made a crucial stoppage-time save to prevent a late winner for DR Congo.

Penalty Shootout Heartbreak

During penalties, Nwabali initially saved two shots, giving Nigeria hope. However, in sudden death, defender Semi Ajayi saw his effort saved, allowing Chancel Mbemba to slot home the decisive spot-kick and send DR Congo through to the intercontinental play-offs.

Looking Ahead

The Super Eagles had previously beaten Gabon 4-1 to reach this stage, while DR Congo overcame Cameroon. Nigeria will now turn its focus to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled for Morocco next month.
