ABUJA, NIGERIA – 18 November 2025 – UNICEF has condemned in strong terms the attack on the Government Girls Secondary School in the Maga community of Kebbi State, Northwest Nigeria, which reportedly led to the killing of the school’s vice-principal and the abduction of 25 students.
The organisation described the incident as a devastating reminder of the urgent need to ensure the protection of children, their schools, and the educators who support their learning.
“We stand with the affected community during this difficult moment. Our heartfelt condolences go to the families who have lost loved ones, and we express our sincere wishes for a full recovery to those injured,” UNICEF said in a statement.
UNICEF called for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted students.
The agency emphasized that children, education facilities, and school personnel are protected under international law and must never be targets of violence. It stressed that those responsible for the attack must be brought to justice in line with national and international standards.
Recalling Nigeria’s endorsement of the Safe Schools Declaration in 2015, UNICEF urged all stakeholders to intensify efforts toward its full implementation. The Declaration outlines practical measures to preserve the civilian character of educational institutions and guarantee safe access to learning, even during conflict.
UNICEF reaffirmed its commitment to working with government partners, civil society organisations, and communities to strengthen child protection systems and promote safe, inclusive learning environments across the country. It stressed that these systems must be fortified to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
“No child should ever be put at risk while pursuing an education,” the statement added.
