The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to urgently tackle the worsening security situation across the country to prevent more citizens from falling prey to insurgent attacks.
The appeal comes after terrorists stormed Kebbi State on Monday, abducting 25 female students from the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School around 4 a.m. and killing a secondary school vice principal.
On Wednesday, gunmen attacked the Eruku community in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, killing three people and kidnapping about 35 others.
Less than a day later, suspected bandits struck again in Kwara, abducting four rice farmers in Bokungi Village, Edu Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero warned that insecurity could escalate further if the Federal Government fails to take decisive action.
Ajaero also expressed sympathy to the families of the victims in Kebbi.
“We are deeply saddened by the news of the abduction of college students by bandits in Kebbi State.
“While we share in the pain and trauma of the victims, their parents, and the state governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, we urge the Federal Government to step up efforts to secure the nation’s land and people.
“Massive budgets don’t seem to be yielding results. What is going wrong? We should all be alarmed by the shrinking physical and psychological space in the country, and we call on the Federal Government—custodian of our armed forces and our economic resources—to reflect more deeply and act decisively.”
