President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Olusegun Awolowo, grandson of the late statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
The President conveyed his condolences to the Awolowo family in a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The statement was titled, “President Tinubu Mourns the Passing of Awo’s Grandson, Segun Awolowo.”
Tinubu described Awolowo’s passing at the age of 62 as a tragic loss “not only to the Awolowo family, but to the entire nation.”
He noted that Olusegun Awolowo upheld the values of the Awolowo legacy.
“Segun exemplified the Awolowo pedigree in his appearance, character, and conduct. Like his grandfather, he was a lawyer dedicated to the pursuit of truth and justice,” Tinubu said.
The President highlighted Awolowo’s contributions to national development, particularly his tenure as Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council from 2013 to 2021, during which he became the agency’s longest-serving head.
Tinubu extended his condolences to Awolowo’s wife and children, the wider Awolowo family, and his mother, Sisi Abah Folawiyo. He also sympathised with the people and governments of Ogun State, the South-West, and the nation at large.
“May his soul rest in peace,” he prayed.
The Awolowo family formally announced his death on Thursday, describing it as a painful loss.
“With extremely heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Olusegun Awolowo,” the family said.
